Pura is reimagining the future of fragrance with smart home technology

PROBLEM

But finding a fragrance that you like online is incredibly tricky.

ROLE

Product Designer | Art Director

GOAL

Selling scents online tricky because customers usually base it from smelling. Having a more effective quiz to guide our customers scents we think would like will help increase our first time customer base.

The main goal is to redesign the quiz to give new customers a way to design their perfect scenting experience, and existing customers to discover new scents.

The first iteration of the Pura Fragrance quiz was a 4 question quiz that generated generic results. The user can only get recommendations for one room at a time, but what if they have multiple rooms to scent? On average, a Pura customer owns 2 devices in their home.

The first step was figuring out what the right questions to ask were. We’ve found through testing, that our users actually don’t always know what they like and aren’t familiar with the different scent types and notes.

Thus, partnering with our scent team was crucial to help provide education in the quiz along the way on top of recommendations.

I mapped out what category of questions needed to go in what order. The quiz also breaks off in order to support the future car device.

We started with a 12 question with a split in between that would lead users to different questions. We tested this v1 to an 8 person focus group that was gathered by a PM and our findings were the following:

Subsequent questions delve deeper, asking about preferred rooms for scents and the desired ambiance in each. The final question gauges preference for scent intensity, asking if customers prefer strong or light fragrances.

Throughout the quiz, we also educate customers with "Pura Facts," providing insights about the app, scheduling, fragrance intensity, and more.

Our ultimate goal is to assist customers in not only finding fragrances that suit their preferences, but also educating them about our product to speed up their purchasing decisions in the end.

  1. our users didn’t want to spend so much time on the quiz.

  2. almost half of them knew more what scents they disliked

  3. needed more visual elements to help educate about the product and the scents

The new quiz

After finalizing the key questions, I started designing the flow. Here are the final mock-ups. The initial question aims to collect data about our customers' familiarity with scents.

Next, we asks about preferred scent types, with an additional slide-out feature for those unfamiliar with scent types to learn more. Based on feedback from our user tests, customers indicated they often know what scents they dislike, I included an option to specify scents to avoid.

FAVORITE PART

I was able to be a lot more playful with the style and worked closely with our awesome animator, Jacob Moreno.
